Miriam Yorks, front and center, at Boston Celtics 'play-by-play' ".
Goof Proof Unlimited was formed in 1998 to address the needs of a clientele seeking accurate proofreading and copy editing services with a quick turnaround time. Finding this to be the perfect environment for a start-up company, Miriam Yorks had come full circle and decided that now was the time to diversify and expand. She is Goof Proof's sole proprietor.
Recognized early on for her astute capabilities for proofreading, Miriam, at the age of six, entered a spelling bee contest at her local elementary school. She outperformed all of the entrants, setting in motion the possibility of eventually nurturing and securing the job of her dreams.
As Miriam continued her education, she found that she was not reading, per se, but reading in between the lines in search of errors. She was unable to focus on context, since she was looking for mistakes in content. At first she thought she had ADD, but then realized it was Attention to Detail and Deadlines.
As the years passed, Miriam was never far removed from her passion to proofread. Employed as a Legal Executive Assistant for several prestigious Boston law firms, she was often called upon to proofread lengthy legal documents, firm collateral pieces and website modifications for partners, support staff and their marketing departments. The feedback would often be an encouraging “you should be a professional proofreader”.
Taking that to heart, while continuing to work in the legal establishment, Miriam was offered and accepted a very challenging and exciting "moonlighting" job with the Boston Celtics. She was their play-by-play typist. This position required not only a commitment to attend every Celtics home game, but to input every play, with great speed, clarity and accuracy. This information was then immediately distributed to members of the media to assist them in writing their articles. There was no room for misteaks (oops, mistakes!!). Her work needed to be perfection personified. In a segment, covered on K.C. Jones & Company TV special, sports reporter John Dennis stated “Miriam is the hardest working person in the NBA”. In that same segment, Gary Gillis went on to state “Can you imagine having a court seat (press row) at every Celtics home game and never watching? Miriam was responsible for recording every foul, time-out and substitution of all Celtic home games”. Miriam continues to work for the Celtics in a different capacity.
